The summer does serious damage to hair through sunshine, chlorine, and saltwater. Find out how to detox and enjoy beautiful, healthy hair by Halloween.

After a summer of fun in the sun and less time spent on taking care of hair. There is usually a lot of work to be done in the fall season. The sun, chlorine, and salt water have taken their toll and hair is now dry, brittle and can even be falling out. Here are the best ways to ensure healthy hair by Halloween.

Treat Hair With Moisture

See a salon professional to diagnose and treat all of the symptoms. Professionals will know exactly what to do if symptoms go beyond normal, summertime dryness. If the symptoms are found to just be from the summertime stress to hair, ask about a clarifying shampoo and deep conditioning treatment. Usually in the $20 range, this treatment only takes about half an hour and can do wonders on distressed hair.

The clarifying shampoo will sit under heat for about 15 minutes and then be rinsed out. Then, the deep treatment (usually moisturizing) will be left on for an additional 15 minutes under heat. After being rinsed, the hair should feel soft and touchable. This is the same kind of treatment a stylist would use on hard water buildup, and should last about a month. Bring home a clarifying shampoo and an at-home deep treatment to use once a week for continued results.

Taking Care of Color

Color can tend to be washed out and faded-looking by this time in the year. It usually needs a fresher, richer appearance after the toll the sun and chlorine have taken on it. Most women go towards lighter, more honey toned blonde shades for the summer. For the fall, the hair needs a break from the bleach and lightener, so go with a more natural color. Natural blondes can opt for more of a golden, darker shade to give hair a break and compliment their skin tone. Natural brunettes can go for more of a rich, chocolate shade. Most darker shades have conditioning qualities in them. Not only will your hair appreciate a break from the harsh bleaching, but you will start to feel like fall is coming.

Make sure to keep moisture in the hair as much as possible. Even after the hair feels like it's in better condition, continue to use a treatment at least once a month. The key to healthy hair is to always be treating it instead of letting go and fixing it later. Keep up with regular trims so the ends don't get too dry again, and always consult your stylist if more problems persist.
